Ultasonic Measurement of Skin Thickness in Normal Population as the Indenx of Osteoporosis

Abstract
Osteoporosis is developed by progressive decrease of bone mass from decreased colla-gen content of bone. Accurate measurement of bone collagen is necessary for the diagnosis of osteoporosis and it is possible by bone biopsy, however bone biopsy is not easy in clini-cal practice. Skin collagen is consist with type I collagen which is same type of bone colla-gen and progressive decrease of bone collagen is reflected by decrease of skin collagen. Since skin thickness reflect skin collagen amount, skin thickness measurement may be a useful method for the evaluation of osteoporosis. So ultrasonic skin thickness measurement was developed for the evaluation of osteoporosis.
Ultrasonic skin thickness measurement device Osetosone have been used for the diagno-sis of osteoporosis for may years in Caucasian population but skin thickness data is not available in Korean population.
To evaluate usefulness of skin thickness from normal population, ultrasonic measure-ment of skin thickness by Osteosone DC III(Minhorst, Germany) were performed from 233 normal population of Korean people of various age groups.
The skin thickness is increased from the age group of under 20 to peak value of 1.095 ¡¾0.171 mm in age group of 21 to 30. The skin thickness not significantly change in age group of 31 to 40. However significantly decrease of 7.4% in age group of 41 to 50. Further progressively decrease of 2.4% in age group of 41 to 60 and 2.3% decrease in age group of over 61.
From these data skin thickness may be useful for the evaluation of progressive decreased collagen of skin and bone. Further evaluation of skin thickness from osteoporotic patients are required.
